Welding Quality: What a Buyer Should Ask to Receive
For a buyer, welding quality is best discussed through the project requirements, agreed inspection points and relevant records. Visual appearance alone does not establish that every requirement has been met. Before production begins, clarify which specifications apply, who reviews the work and what evidence the client expects as part of the completed metalwork package.
Establish the project requirements
Identify the responsible designer’s requirements and the standards or specifications stated in the contract. Ask the fabricator how those requirements will be reflected in the production information and inspection plan. Avoid inventing inspection requirements midway through the job unless the project team agrees their effect on cost and programme. A clear starting instruction is more useful than an undefined request for premium welding.
Agree review and inspection points
Discuss when the client or appointed inspector needs to see work before it is covered, coated or otherwise becomes difficult to access. Record any hold points, notification requirements and responsibilities for accepting the work. Where specialist inspection or testing is specified, identify the responsible party and the documents to be issued. These arrangements should be coordinated with the fabrication sequence rather than treated as a separate final visit.
Collect a meaningful handover record
Ask for the agreed inspection results, material-related records and the drawing references associated with the completed items. Keep any corrective-action record with the final acceptance information. A photograph can help document progress, but it should not replace a required inspection report or professional judgement. Organised records make it easier to understand what was inspected and which version of the work was accepted.
Questions to bring to your project discussion
- Which project welding requirements apply?
- Who reviews the inspection plan?
- Are hold points agreed before coating or closure?
- Who arranges specified specialist testing?
- Which records will be handed over against each item?
Your next step
Include the required inspection and documentation scope in the enquiry. Afnan Group can discuss fabrication quality records and inspection coordination for the agreed package, with acceptance based on the project’s specified requirements and responsible reviewers.
Prepare a project brief ↗These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
