Metal Frames for Signage: Coordinating the Supporting Structure
A sign package may involve a designer, signage supplier, fabricator, electrician and installation team. The metal frame should therefore be briefed as part of a coordinated assembly. Knowing the graphic size is useful, but the frame requirements also depend on the location, interfaces and responsibilities established for the complete sign rather than its appearance alone.
Define each party’s scope
Identify who supplies the sign face, lighting, electrical work and support arrangement. Name the responsible designer for the relevant technical requirements and any project approvals. Clarify whether the fabrication enquiry covers only a frame or a wider execution package. Written boundaries help avoid a supplier assuming that another party will resolve an interface that has not actually been assigned to anyone.
Coordinate drawings and connections
Share the latest sign dimensions and the information available for the proposed fixing location. Arrange review of support and fixing details by the responsible professionals. Identify openings or interfaces required by separately supplied components before fabrication release. A frame drawing should be coordinated with the signage drawing so that panel joints, access requirements and visible edges do not become installation-day surprises.
Plan finishing and future servicing
Agree the finish of visible metal, protection during transport and the installation sequence. Consider the access required for the sign’s separately supplied serviceable parts. Identify who will record final acceptance and collect the handover documents. The project benefits from reviewing the frame, sign and maintenance arrangement as one coordinated outcome rather than accepting each supplier’s component without checking the interfaces between them.
Questions to bring to your project discussion
- Is this a frame-only or combined package?
- Who owns design and fixing approval?
- Are signage and frame drawings coordinated?
- Which service and electrical interfaces are required?
- How will the completed sign be serviced?
Your next step
Afnan Group can discuss the metal fabrication and execution part of your signage project. Share the sign layout and site information so responsibilities, interface details and the fabrication approval process can be established before production.
Prepare a project brief ↗These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
