What to Include in a Structural Steel Project Scope
A structural steel package contains more than a list of members. The project scope must explain who designs the structure, who produces fabrication information and who coordinates the site interfaces. Establishing those boundaries early helps the client understand what is actually included and which approvals are needed before workshop production begins.
Separate the design responsibilities
Identify the party responsible for structural calculations, connection design and any review required by the project team. Do not treat a fabrication quotation as an automatic appointment for every design service. State what the fabricator will receive, what it must develop and who is authorised to approve changes. This protects the programme from decisions that otherwise surface only after materials have been ordered.
List the physical interfaces
Provide information about foundations, adjacent structures, cladding, equipment supports and the conditions around the installation area. Explain who verifies existing dimensions and who supplies or sets out the relevant interfaces. A connection to an existing building requires information about that building; a photograph is not a substitute for the responsible designer reviewing the proposed load path and connection arrangement.
Set release and handover points
Agree the document issue needed for pricing, the information needed for fabrication release and the conditions needed before installation. Include material records, inspection requirements, finish approvals and the handover documents expected by the client. Connect these requirements to the programme. A useful schedule recognises that approved information, site readiness and workshop work are linked, rather than assuming fabrication can progress independently of unresolved design decisions.
Questions to bring to your project discussion
- Who owns structural and connection design?
- What drawings are issued for fabrication?
- Who verifies site interfaces and dimensions?
- Which inspection and material records are required?
- What constitutes practical completion and handover?
Your next step
Write the responsibility boundaries into the scope before comparing prices. Afnan Group can discuss a metal design and execution package around your project requirements; structural suitability and applicable approvals must remain with the appointed responsible professionals.
Prepare a project brief ↗These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
