Managing Interior Design Reviews Without Losing Decisions
Interior design reviews become more productive when the client team knows what is being decided at each stage. Layout, material direction and individual details should not all be reconsidered without a record of earlier approvals. A simple decision process helps the owner, designer and later execution team understand which information is current and where further work is required.
Give each review a purpose
Before a meeting, identify the questions that need a decision and the information the client should review. Separate a concept discussion from approval of specific materials or layouts. Where more than one person represents the client, nominate someone to consolidate the response. A clear, coordinated brief is more useful than several contradictory instructions issued after the same review session.
Record approvals and open items
Keep the drawing or presentation revision, the client response and any outstanding questions together. Describe conditional approval carefully so it is not mistaken for an unrestricted instruction. When a selection changes, note the reason and the affected information. This allows the project team to understand the current design direction without relying on the memory of people who attended an earlier meeting.
Prepare a usable design handover
At the end of the design-only appointment, identify the approved layouts, schedules and other agreed deliverables. List unresolved matters and the specialist responsibilities that remain outside the appointment. The execution team should know which information requires its own technical development or confirmation. A tidy handover reduces ambiguity, but it should not be described as a substitute for the contractor’s execution planning or other required professional reviews.
Questions to bring to your project discussion
- What decision is needed at this review?
- Who consolidates the client response?
- Is the reviewed drawing revision identified?
- Are conditional approvals and changes recorded?
- Are execution responsibilities clear at handover?
Your next step
Afnan Group can structure interior and parametric design reviews around agreed stages and deliverables. The interior service remains design only, with construction and installation undertaken by separately appointed execution parties against the final agreed project information.
Prepare a project brief ↗These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
