Sending DWG and PDF Drawings to a Fabrication Supplier
A useful drawing submission is easy to identify, open and interpret. Sending a DWG file and a PDF issue together can help a project team communicate both editable design information and the intended drawing presentation, but the files still need a consistent revision and a clear purpose. Organisation matters as much as the attachment format.
Issue a complete drawing set
Include a drawing register listing the numbers, titles, revisions and issue purpose. Check that the PDF and DWG files represent the same intended issue and explain any difference. Identify supporting specifications or schedules that the supplier needs to read with the drawings. Avoid sending a mixed collection of screenshots, old files and current drawings without describing which information takes precedence.
Make open decisions visible
Mark missing dimensions, unresolved interfaces and items that need a site check. State whether the package is for pricing, technical review or fabrication release. When a supplier asks a question, connect the response to the relevant drawing reference and retain the decision. This is more dependable than assuming that a message sent separately will reach every person who later uses the file.
Keep revisions traceable
When the design changes, retain the earlier submission and issue a clearly identified replacement. Explain what changed and whether work already ordered or fabricated is affected. Ask the receiving party to confirm the revision being used for the next stage. A revision history is valuable only when the team can also identify the current approved instruction without searching through a long conversation.
Questions to bring to your project discussion
- Do the PDF and DWG belong to the same revision?
- Is a drawing register included?
- Is the issue purpose clearly stated?
- Are open questions and site checks identified?
- Has the receiving team confirmed the current instruction?
Your next step
Afnan Group can review the current drawing package as part of a metalwork enquiry. Provide the register, supporting requirements and approval status so the scope can be assessed against a coherent set of information rather than isolated attachments.
Prepare a project brief ↗These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
