Custom Gates and Fences: Information to Prepare Before Ordering

Afnan Group editorial guides · 3 November 2026 · 2 min read

A gate or fence should be ordered around its location, use and approved project arrangement. The buyer needs to explain more than height, width and colour. Access routes, neighbouring finishes, operation and any specialist equipment can affect the scope, so a coordinated brief helps avoid a fabricated item arriving before its interfaces are ready.

Describe how it will be used

Explain the required access, the expected method of operation and any privacy or visual objectives. Provide a layout showing the gate or fence relative to the property and circulation routes. Where automation or access control is involved, identify the specialist responsible for that equipment and its safety requirements. Treat those systems as coordinated work rather than assuming every fabrication price includes them.

Verify the setting-out information

Record levels, opening sizes, support locations and the available design information for foundations or existing structures. Identify the party responsible for verifying those conditions. A gate opening measured at one point may not explain the full movement area or surrounding finishes. Mark any uncertainty on the enquiry drawing so it can be resolved before the workshop releases final dimensions.

Agree finish and site execution

Specify the appearance of panels, joints and visible fixings, supported by a reference sample where appropriate. Discuss delivery size, access, unloading and protection. Define responsibility for specialist installation, commissioning and surrounding work. At completion, ask for the agreed care information and the records relevant to any separately supplied operating equipment so the owner understands who to contact for maintenance.

Questions to bring to your project discussion

  • What access and operation are required?
  • Who supplies any automation or access-control system?
  • Are support and foundation details approved?
  • Is the movement area clear and verified?
  • Who handles commissioning, protection and making good?

Your next step

For an enquiry, send a site layout, photographs and the latest design information. Afnan Group can review the metalwork scope and discuss the fabrication and execution requirements, with specialist systems and approvals identified separately in the proposal.

Prepare a project brief ↗

These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
